TU Dance: GYROKINESIS® Workshop for Adults with Wendy Anderson

Please join us at TU Dance Center for a 6-week GYROKINESIS® workshop for adults with Wendy Anderson—starting with breathing patterns and progressing into motions that mobilize the spine through arching, curling, bending, spiraling, and waving. Connecting with the breath, the movement starts to feel like a dance: oxygenating the circulatory system, stimulating the nervous system, and opening the body. Exercises are done on chairs/stools and in standing and lying positions. No experience is necessary.

Wednesdays, 4:30-5:45pm
March 19-April 30 with no class on April 2.
Online registration is required. Cost: $90

For more information about Wendy and to register, click here.

Wendy Anderson has trained as a dancer, fitness professional, Pilates trainer, and presently Gyrotonic Trainer. She is an authorized teacher and teacher trainer (Pre-Trainer) of both Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic. Having the good fortune of working with some of the most renowned Master Trainers, including Juergen Bamberger, Juliu Horvath (creator of Gyrotonic), and Paul Horvath (physiotherapist), Wendy has also trained on all pieces of Gyrotonic equipment. She trains all levels of students from highly accomplished athletes to the very beginner who has started their adventure with Gyrokinesis or Gyrotonics later in life. “Always amazed by the beauty, depth, and sophistication of this movement modality and how people can benefit from gyro on all levels of their being.”

Student Matinee: BalletMet

BalletMet is committed to uplifting communities and schools through dance with education programs focused on developing body awareness and movement through learning and fun.

During this student-centered program, dancers will perform excerpts from Timeless Tide, a work that brings swirling energy onstage to depict the gravitational pull of time, and selections from Seasons, in which dancers gracefully depict the cycle of nature. With choreography by Yue Yin and Edwaard Liang, the one-hour program highlights cultural contributions from Asian-American artists. Throughout the performance, BalletMet artists will explain and demonstrate what students are seeing. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions at a post-performance Q&A.

BalletMet

Lauded for its versatility and innovative repertory, Columbus, OH-based BalletMet will grace the stage with a program featuring a stunning Northrop Centennial Commission and a joyful ode to music through dance.

Timeless Tide brings swirling energy to depict the gravitational pull of time and the countless interactions that guide its continuous momentum. Set to an original score by Michel Banabila, it is the latest work from acclaimed artistic director, dancer, and choreographer Yue Yin. World-renowned choreographer Edwaard Liang’s Seasons, inspired by Max Richter’s reimagining of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, gracefully depicts the cycle of seasons with dynamic movement and evocative imagery.

BalletMet’s new artistic director, Remi Wörtmeyer choreographed Miroirs. French for “mirrors,”  Miroirs hovers between neoclassical and contemporary dance, inspired by Ravel’s poetic music, which was written in five movements, each dedicated to a fellow member of the French avant-garde group Les Apaches. Miroirs is a non-narrative piece that contains inspirations of reflection—literally in the metallic costumes and chain set, and figuratively in the idea of seeing our world, our narcissism, and our relationships in reflection.

50 Years of Dance History: Video and Stories by Patrick Scully

A Few Taleswill be a unique experience of Minnesota dance history spanning the last 50 years, and it all started with modern dance classes at the University of Minnesota. Come see Patrick on stage telling stories and sharing videos of his work.

Patrick took his first dance classes at the University of Minnesota in 1972. He’s been part of the Twin Cities dance scene ever since. The show, located at the Barbara Barker Center for Dance, will focus on his dance history as he shares personal stories of the past as a local artist, activist, and provocateur. For decades, Patrick has pushed the edge with particular emphasis on being out as a gay man.

The structure of A Few Tales… is based on the TV show Jeopardy. Behind each box is at least one story and includes a video of his work. The audience determines the flow of the show choosing box by box among six categories, each with five choices, to determine the evening’s stories. The dance categories include: Contact Improvisation, Dance Spaces, Choreographed Works, Solo Shows, $urvival, and Activism in Dance. The five choices in each category span five decades: the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s.

Patrick Scully was among the first dance artists in Minnesota to experience contact improvisation, and it has been central to his work for half a century. He’s known for works ranging from intimate/autobiographical to boat ballets on rivers in Minnesota and Germany. In 1986, he founded Patrick’s Cabaret, making the local performing arts ecosystem more inclusive and democratic. He’s had eight different spaces in town.

Patrick has been called a provocateur, free speech champion, impresario, raconteur, choreographer, performance artist, orator, storyteller, pioneer, and activist. He’ll be telling these personal stories and showing videos of his performing works.

Just show up! This program is by donation.
