Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants

Rauschenberg Dancer Emergency Grants are open for Cycle 6.

These are one-time grants of up to $5,000 to professional dancers who have experienced dire financial emergencies due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences, including lack or imminent endangerment of essentials such as housing, medicine/healthcare, utilities, and food. Cycle 6 has a deadline of December 9, for emergency expenses between July 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023. Cycle 7 will open on January 10, 2023 with a deadline of February 17, 2023. This program is open to artists living anywhere in the U.S, its territories, tribal nations, and the District of Columbia. Artists with disabilities, artists of color, and artists living outside of New York are particularly encouraged to apply. The Cowles Center Announces the 2022–2023 Generating Room Cohort

Congratulations to the four artists selected for The Cowles Center’s Generating Room program: Sydney Ward, Yuki Tokuda, Tumelo Khupe, and Josè A. Luis.

This 8-month studio residency supports Minnesotan choreographers who need time and space to develop a project or idea rooted in dance without the pressure of a completed end product. With support from the Jerome Foundation, this year’s Generating Room will focus on four early-career choreographers in nurturing a work-in-progress through a $3,000 stipend, 200 hours of free rehearsal space, access to a $500 stipend for a mentor, and general administrative support.

Jerome Foundation Announces Grants to Nine Minnesota Dance Organizations

Grants to 9 dance organizations and initiatives in Minnesota announced.

The Jerome Foundation is pleased to announce 9 grants totaling $530,136 to Minnesota-based arts organizations and initiatives to support opportunities for choreographers and dance makers at early stages in their careers. These two-year grants support new and expanded programs and activities that benefit early career Minnesota choreographers who create original works.

Grants were awarded to:

  • Ananya Dance Theater (ADT)
  • Explore Choreo, fiscally sponsored by We Win Institute
  • Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center (IRoots)
  • MOVO, fiscally sponsored by Springboard for the Arts
  • Red Eye Theater
  • Three Thirty One Space
  • The Cowles Center
  • Threads Dance Project
  • Walker Art Center

To better understand and assess their needs, the Foundation convened over 50 local choreographers, dance presenters, curators, programmers, dance educators, and leaders to identify the most urgent needs and priorities facing early career dance makers. Participants identified a wide range of concerns, including the isolation growing out of the COVID pandemic, the loss of opportunities occasioned by the shuttering of multiple organizations and dance programs, and the need for equitable environments free of racism. Artists were especially interested in mentorships and opportunities to engage with others with whom they are aligned creatively and aesthetically to share and experience one another’s work, experiment and collectively process ideas. A subsequent survey of the dance community affirmed these priorities.

Based on this input from focus groups and survey respondents, nine dance organizations and initiatives, cited for their significant support of early career choreographers and the dance community, were invited to apply and were awarded one-time two-year grants.

The McKnight Fellowship Intent to Apply (ITA) for the 2023 Dancer and Choreographer Fellowships is open, with a deadline of Wednesday, September 7. The final application is due in spring 2023.

Completing the Intent to Apply gives you:

  • Personal support on your application

McKnight Fellowship Intent to Apply Webinar – August 24

The McKnight Fellowship Intent to Apply for the 2023 Dancer and Choreographer Fellowships is now open, with a deadline of Wednesday, September 7, 2022. The McKnight Fellowship Program is offering an informational webinar for all interested applicants regarding the 2023 Intent to Apply, focusing on frequently asked questions regarding the application materials.

Generating Room Application Due Sunday

Due to technical difficulties with the application, that have now been fixed, we are extending the deadline through Sunday, August 28 at 11:59pm. The application has been edited to allow links to large work samples.

Supported by the Jerome Foundation, The Cowles Center’s newest Generating Room Program, Choreography Development, is an 8-month long studio residency that supports four early career (2-10 years of generative experience) Minnesota choreographers in nurturing a work in progress through:

  • $3,000 stipend
  • 200 hours of free rehearsal space
  • access to a $500 stipend for a mentor
  • administrative support

This program is intended for Minnesota choreographers who need time and space to develop a project or idea rooted in dance without the pressure of a completed end product. Choreographers will be selected through a scored application process by our Programs and Education committee.

Mentoring/Coaching Program for Young Dance Professionals – Deadline Extended

Applications for the I A.M. Arts (formerly Alanna Morris-Van Tassel Productions) Mentorship/Coaching program opens Monday, July 18 and closes Saturday, September 11. This program is a one-year mentorship open to a young professional entering their junior year of high school in the fall of 2022 and graduating in the class of 2024. This program is for a self-driven, self-motivated, and focused young female dancer of color looking to pursue a career in dance. The mentee will work with I A.M. Arts Artistic Director and independent dancer-choreographer, Alanna Morris, on post-secondary school/college preparedness as well as life and business skills.

This mentorship includes research on scholarships ($$$), including support in applying for the YoungArts Award; a solo dance commission for auditions and scholarships; college essay review and editorial assistance; and letters of recommendation as needed.  The mentee will have access to Alanna’s global network of dance artists, including top educators at leading educational institutions, directors, dancers and choreographers working in a multiplicity of backgrounds – companies as well as freelance – encompassing a wide range of aesthetics, and geographies.

How to apply:

  • An application form with reference by an educator or dance professional – name and contact information only, no letter is required
  • Resume

Cost: Zero cost. This is a $3,000 value and one-year commitment provided to the selected mentee (and their family) free of charge due to a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. Rehearsal space is included in the mentorship program. The following are not included: housing, travel to and from meetings, living expenses, or relocation fees.

Location: The program consists of virtual or in-person meetings for life and career coaching as well as in-person rehearsals.  All rehearsals take place in the Twin Cities. Applicants need not reside in the Twin Cities but will need to have the ability to travel. Applicants will need to be available for some evenings and/or weekends.

Time commitment: While this is an agreed-upon schedule set by Alanna and the mentee, guided by their goals, the program includes an intense rehearsal period in the beginning of the mentorship in September at approximately 6 hours/week or 30 total hours over 5 weeks to prepare for the YoungArts (and other) scholarship auditions. Rehearsals for coaching then shift to approximately 4 hours/month to the end of the school year. Meetings for goal-setting and life coaching occur weekly until January 2023, and then as often as needed throughout the school year.

Duration:
July 18-September 11: Application period has been extended
September 12-18: Interviews
September 23: Final decisions made
September 26: Mentorship begins and continues through August 31, 2023

This is at least a one-year commitment. Though the program officially ends in August, Alanna commits to be an ongoing resource for the mentee as long as it is desired.
