Suzanne Costello joined Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater in New York City in 1979 and became its Artistic Co-Director in 1984. During her career with the company, she has been highlighted as a performer, choreographer, teacher, and rehearsal director. As Director of Arts & Education and Arts & Healthcare Programs for the company, she creates and facilitates the many community-inclusive projects SPDT has come to be known for nationally and internationally.

Jane Skinner Peck is a researcher, choreographer, dance historian, teacher, writer/playwright, and performer. She has worked across the United States, Canada, and France for over thirty years. She found that dance history enables her to combine her love of history with her love of dance. She has extensive training in both modern dance and dance history, directing performances with her company, Dance Revels Moving History, since 1990. Jane’s period choreography conveys varied past cultures and economic classes of the Upper Midwest and Europe in a most immediate and authentic way.

Studio Stories: Reminiscing on Twin Cities Dance with Jess Forest

Studio Stories airs Thursday, July 20 at noon with Jess Forest (Jesse Neumann-Peterson) for Season 11, Episode 131.

Jess is a dancer, theater performer, choreographer, and visual artist that toured nationally as a company member, teacher, and community outreach worker with Stuart Pimsler Dance and Theater (SPDT) for eight seasons. Before joining SPDT, he was a
company member, performer, and teacher with the intergenerational dance company Kairos Dance Theater (Kairos Alive!). As an independent dancer, he has performed with a number of local choreographers, such as Rosy Simas, Off-Leash Area, and many more. Jess is a 2014 Sage Award Recipient for Outstanding Dance Performer, awarded for his performances in The Student by Vanessa Voskuil, Under the Current by Sharon Picasso, and Azalea Nights by Christine Maginnis.

The Studio Stories podcast returns Thursday, July 13 at noon with Stephen Yogi Rueff for Season 11, Episode 130.

Stephen’s professional career as a dancer spanned from the Ozone Dance studio days, to Rezone Dancers, to being a founding member of Zenon. He then spent 2 years with MN Jazz Dance and 2 years with New Dance Ensemble, performing across the US and Paris with these groups. As an independent dancer and choreographer, Mr. Rueff founded the Youth Movement dance company for 12 through 20-year-olds, touring the US with a rotating repertory of dances by various local and national choreographers.

Studio Stories: CANDY BOX Edition with J’Sun Howard

Studio Stories podcast airs this Thursday, April 13 at noon with a special CANDY BOX Dance Festival conversation with featured artist, J’Sun Howard for Season 10, Episode 128.

These special CANDY BOX editions of Studio Stories delve a little more into the dance works the artists will be sharing. J’Sun Howard of Chicago will be sharing his work, moonless night. The dance is the research/next iteration of a multi-year project titled The Righteous Beauty of the Things Never Accounted For that explores Black fugitivity. moonless night is about Black banality and mundanity and is loosely based on “Enacting Entanglements: A Score for Four,” a performance score conceived by scholar and artist Amber Rose Johnson.

Studio Stories: CANDY BOX Edition with Berit Ahlgren

Studio Stories podcast airs this Thursday, April 6 at noon with a CANDY BOX Dance Festival special conversation with featured artist, Berit Ahlgren of Honeyworks for Season 10, Episode 127.

These special CANDY BOX editions of Studio Stories delve a little more into the dance works the artists will be sharing. Berit premieres Cedarbacke, a dance project in 3 phases which considers the history of Minneapolis’s Southern Theater and its diverse neighboring community. As a trilogy work, this first segment considers the Southern Theater in the 1920-30’s as a central location for immigrants and first generation Americans to gather, sharing in entertainment and cultural exchange. Nine dance artists collaborate and share with violinist Sara Pajunen in a playful homage to the Southern Theater and a recognition of the waves of cultures the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood has been home to.
