Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Let the Crows Come

November 20 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

$20 – $30

Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Let the Crows Come invokes the metaphor of crows as messengers for the living and guides for the departed to channel memory and homeland, guidance and dislocation.

Featuring Ashwini Ramaswamy, Alanna Morris-Van Tassel, and Berit Ahlgren, the south Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam is deconstructed and recontextualized to recall a memory that has a shared origin but is remembered differently from person to person. Set to an original recorded score of classical south Indian instrumentation, electro-acoustic cello, and electronics/turntables.

Ashwini Ramaswamy has trained in the south Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam with her gurus – her mother Ranee, sister Aparna (Directors of Ragamala Dance Company), and the legendary Smt. Alarmel Valli of Chennai, India, since the age of 5. As an independent choreographer, she has received commissions from the Liquid Music Series, American Dance Platform, and The Great Northern, residencies at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, UNC-Chapel Hill, and the National Center for Choreography, and support from the National Dance Project, MAP Fund, US Artists International, MN State Arts Board, Minnesota Regional Arts Council, a Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship and McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowships for Dance and Choreography.

Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Let the Crows Come is presented by The Cowles Center and Ashwini Ramaswamy as part of The Cowles Center’s 21/22 Season.
