DanceMN is a free, uncurated weekly newsletter. We believe that all styles of dance and areas of our state deserve representation in our materials.

To that end, we want students, emerging artists, established individuals and organizations, schools, studios, universities, audience members, community dance groups, teachers, hobbyists, social media dancers, financial stakeholders, and YOU to know that DanceMN exists to support and connect with you—no matter where you live in Minnesota.

If you aren’t using DanceMN to showcase or share your activities, or to find ways to participate in dance, help us understand why. Join us for one of three upcoming conversations to discuss how DanceMN can better achieve its vision that “all our connected to dance in Minnesota.”

Sign up to participate in a virtual discussion, hosted via Zoom:

Each conversation will follow the same format so please only sign up for one. Conversations will be facilitated by Ashleigh Penrod of Mess Hill and informed by results obtained from DanceMN’s recent community survey.

This opportunity to engage with our community is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

THREAT is an evening-length work choreographed by TU Dance Guest Artist Yusha-Marie Sorzano.

THREAT is a concert dance theater work that aims to provoke an interrogation of the roles we play as individuals and communities in hierarchies. The work posits that hierarchies have the power to control our behavior and infiltrate our thoughts, even when no authority is present to enforce the rules. Using a physical language and soundscape that fuses multicultural traditions and styles of the West and the African Diaspora, this social exploration invites audiences into a modern narrative that speaks to the universal experience of authority, obedience, and rebellion.

Sunday, May 5 at 2:00pm

About the Guest Performances

Averie Mitchell-Brown explores groundbreaking dance performances celebrating Hip Hop social dances, street styles, and movements of the African diaspora. Set to revolutionary music, these performances foster dialogue, community, and transformative exploration of societal norms and perspectives.

Shoko Tamai invites you on a dance journey inspired by life’s transformations, from moon cycles to butterfly metamorphosis, exploring self-discovery, forgiveness, and intergenerational connections.

At once dreamlike, unsettling, and absurd, Off-Leash Area’s new show, The Knave of Knives – The Duchess of Dawn, introduces two strange and haunting figures from an otherworldly court who engage in a fantastical struggle for power over the multiverse. Taking place in an immersive installation surrounding both stage and audience, the show is performed with movement and music/sound, inspired (loosely) by string theory, and is populated with melancholy stuffed animals and mysterious trophies, dispersed among the fragile threads of a clandestine karmic history.

Created and performed by Jennifer Ilse and Paul Herwig, co-artistic directors of Off-Leash Area.

A workshop lead by Sarah Baumert and Berit Ahlgren, combining the rich languages of Feldenkrais and Gaga. Both practices aim at discovering powerful connections in the body through movement and mindful listening of the physical experience.

Friday, May 3
6:00-8:00pm

This two-hour workshop will consist of a gaga/people class and Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lesson, with hybridized class content and time for discussion at the end. Comfortable clothing to move in is suggested.

Everyone is welcome.
No prior experience required.

Sarah Baumert is known for her thorough and diverse instruction and her dedication to holding space for individual personal discovery. She facilitates whole body alignment in her students as a way for them to access balance, strength, mobility and physical clarity. Through sensory rich movement experiments, she guides students in cultivating mindfulness and deepening their learning process.

Receiving Metropolitan Regional Arts Council’s Next Step Grant in 2011, Berit Ahlgren traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel to study the Gaga Movement Language, and subsequently moved to Israel to pursue teacher certification between 2011— 2012. Ahlgren earned her MFA in Dance from Tisch School of the Arts in 2016, and has since been on faculty at the University of Minnesota and Winona State University, performing with independent choreographers between Minneapolis and New York, and choreographing her own body of work for both stage and camera under her dance organization, HoneyWorks.

Meryl Zaytoun Murman guides participants through interactive improvisations and durational somatic prompts to explore the therapeutic and expressive connection between movement and raw vocal sound.

In this laboratory the voice becomes a vehicle for movement, expanding and transforming sensations and emotions from the subconscious into direct embodied experiences that are felt and expressed by the performer through spontaneous and authentic gesture. Emphasis is placed on awakening the spine to find fluid pathways for vocal vibrations to resonate, and on actively redirecting the sound energy outward through physical sensing and shifting the gaze.

This laboratory is focused on researching these tools for performance, and suited for people in the performing arts, or those wishing to engage with movement and voice through creative processes. Participants will experience tools for landing in presence, a healing informed approach to integrating movement and voice, and alternative pathways to accessing the deeply expressive, erotic, creative source within.

Free to attend. Registration is required in advance.

EMBODY PALESTINE is a workshop by Leila Awadallah (Body Watani Dance) held in collaboration with Meryl Zaytoun Murman, 2024 McKnight International Choreographer. This workshop will guide participants through embodied explorations as a process of communal reflection on the range of emotions stirred by the genocide in Gaza.

To what extent can we use our bodies to connect with experiences we did not have, but learn about through media? How can the body respond and tend to the traumatic imagery in the news? Meryl will facilitate participants through movement and vocal explorations using gesture, mimicry and embodiment as a practice of awareness and communication based on a desire to process the human suffering we are witnessing with physical understanding.

In collaboration, Meryl and Leila will share reflections on the interconnectedness of many crises in the region and ways they work within movement spaces to interweave complex solidarities across bodies. How do we resist together? What actions can we take towards a more healing oriented future?

Dance experience is not necessary, and participants will engage at their own range of intensity.

Advanced registration required. Recommended donation of $5-15 at event. 75% of the income will be donated.

Emerging choreographer working with dancers.

Are you a Minnesota-based emerging choreographer with formal ballet training? Apply for our Laboratory II: Emerging Choreographer Program for a paid opportunity to create a new, full-length, staged production performed by the upper-level students at The School of Ballet Co.Laboratory in March 2025!

The story that Ballet Co.Laboratory will be asking the 2025 emerging choreographer to draw inspiration from is the children’s book Harold and the Purple Crayon – inspired by Harold going to the State Fair. Applicants who apply can choose to present this narrative as a classical or contemporary ballet. The selected choreographer will work alongside the Ballet Co.Laboratory artistic team in selecting the music, designing scenic elements, creating costumes, and casting roles.

Choreographers applying to this program are encouraged to think critically about how ballet can continue to evolve in becoming more inclusive and forward-thinking. Artists are asked to create a production with a story line that sparks the imagination and challenges the audiences’ perception of what ballet is.

All applicants must live in Minnesota, have had formal ballet training, and consider themselves to be an emerging choreographer.

Applications close on May 10, 2024.
