Portrait… is my coming out story, coming out as a gay dancer. It begins in my adolescence in the 1960’s and tracks my journey of discovery through school, college, and into my early professional life in dance. I weave my story into the larger story of the victories and defeats of LGBTQ+ people, not only in Minneapolis/St. Paul but across the country and around the world.
When I grew up in the 50s, and 60’s, Don’t Say Gay was the unspoken law of the land. This show tells my story from that time. It’s bitterly ironic that we open this weekend, when the Supreme Court will announce if they will be reconsidering Marriage Equality in their next term. Along with so much else that is going on right now, performing the show feels all the more important and timely.
