Contemporary Bharathanatyam is a class that combines concepts of both Bharathanatyam, a classical dance from South India (Tamil Nadu) with concepts from contemporary dance. Classes will start with a light stretching/cardio-type warm-up, and then we will work through different positions of the hands, leg rhythms (requires some light stomping), and arm positions. We’ll end by putting it all together and improvising with skills we learned in class!
About the Instructor: Sudarsna Mukund (she/they) is a Tamil multidisciplinary performing artist and engineer. Her teaching practice is rooted in strong fundamentals, a respect for the art form, and a love of finding moments of clarity through movement. She combines ballet, Bharathanatyam, and contemporary dance to make dance accessible and relevant to a variety of movers.
