The Willie August Project premieres Suite for a Dancer, the magnum opus of composer-guitarist Ben Siems. Comprising six movements played without pauses, this symphony-length jazz trio work follows the life of a professional dancer from youthful emergence through late-career serenity. Drawing on a quarter-century of creating music for dance, Siems paints a musical picture of the dancer across years of agonies and triumphs.
The list of choreographers and companies Ben Siems has collaborated with includes Deborah Jinza Thayer, Jennifer Mack, Off-Leash Area, Jim Lieberthal, Vanessa Voskuil, Sharon Picasso, Nicolas Lincoln, Penelope Freeh, Danielle Robinson-Prater, Keane Sense of Rhythm, Cathy Wright, and Joe Chvala and Flying Foot Forum.
