January 1983, East Grand Forks. It might have been just another two-week dance residency in the elementary schools but the Arts & Crafts Guild (the local sponsors for the residency) asked me to bring Shinders to Shinders, a 1982 film celebrating Hennepin Ave, for them to see. I mistakenly agreed.

7:00am, -30 degrees F. The breakfast screening of the film on day two of the residency was a disaster. Could an artist involved with this film be safely allowed in their classrooms? Had they invited Lucifer himself into their midst? It seemed time for responsible adults to mobilize.

This was just the start!

Things got worse, including a "weekend away". The Prairie Gay Community in Fargo had organized a GLBT Dance in Wolverton. The entire town of Wolverton showed up to inform those "visiting" that we were not welcome. Things got even worse.

Hear the whole true story. See Shinders to Shinders in its entirety.
All six dancers from the film will be at the show on Saturday, August 25—a 36-year reunion!

Each year three exceptional Minnesota dance artists receive the coveted honor of a McKnight Dancer Fellowship. To celebrate them, we commission a solo dance for each from a choreographer of their selection. The 2016 and 2017 McKnight Dance Fellows have selected an outstanding group of local, national, and international dance artists to bring their choreographic imaginations to new works expressly tailored for these exceptional performers. The result is SOLO, an evening of six fascinating world premieres. The Fellows and their selected choreographers include:

Lisa "MonaLisa" Berman (2016 Dancer Fellow) - Victor Quijada (Montreal)
Chris Hannon (2016 Dancer Fellow) - Gina Patterson (Wyoming)
Herb Johnson III (2017 Dancer Fellow) - Tight Eyez (Las Vegas)
Krista Langberg (2017 Dancer Fellow) - Karen Sherman (Minneapolis)
Sachiko “La Chayí” Nishiuchi (2017 Dancer Fellow) - Pepe Torres, Luis Peña, Angelita Vargas (Spain)

Theater maker Emily Mendelsohn investigates the making of cross-cultural performance. At CFPA, she will lead a workshop and presentation that supports multidisciplinary artists and movers to (1) open up their personal constellations of identity, history and culture, and (2) integrate what's discovered into their creative practice. You are invited to bring your personal geography to the research process, which will culminate in a public presentation. This two-day workshop explores the transformational potential – for artists and audiences – in understanding “where we are” as we strive to honor and envision who and where we want to be, and will help dancers and movers explore a creative process that investigates the intersections of identity, place and performance.

Schedule: Workshops on Friday, August 17 (6:30-9:30pm) and Saturday, August 18 (10:30am-1:30pm).
Presentation on Saturday, August 18 (7:30-9:30pm).
Sliding scale of $85-$180.

Ground Breaker Movement Labs present Open Source Forms/Skinner workshop.

Open Source Forms (OSF) is guided by the philosophy that the source of creativity and wisdom is available in each of us and offers methods to access the depth, integration and freedom in movement. OSF grew fluidly out of “Skinner Releasing Technique”, an innovative approach to dance/movement training developed by Joan Skinner in the early '60s, often using image-guided floor work to ease tension, promoting an effortless kind of moving, integrated with alignment of the whole self. Skinner instructor Stephanie Skura developed this practice further and named this continued work Open Source Forms.

For all movers!

Per class: $5-$10 sliding scale

Taught by OSF certified instructors Jennifer Arave and Joshua Lorris.

Dates: Sundays through October 14, 2018.
