“[Mercurial George] offered poetic portraits of the self unmoored from others … [she] found companionship, rather heartbreakingly, in objects that populated her stage…” —New York Times

In her idiosyncratic yet masterful solo, Montreal-based choreographer/performance artist Dana Michel wanders through seemingly random heaps of debris onstage as she begins her intense and occasionally comical search for what lurks behind the concept of “identity.” This haunting performance carries audiences on a journey through alternate realities, identities, and emotional states as the artist uses props and objects in order to become the archeologist of her own enigmatic persona. Stretching out time with minimalist and deconstructed movement, she bathes her universe in childhood naiveté and sacred mystery.

Contains mature content and the use of strobe lights.

Mercurial George is presented as part of Out There 2018. 75 minutes. Midwest Premiere.

"One Flat Thing, reproduced" by William Forsythe
"A Picture of You Falling" (duet) by Crystal Pite
"Violoncello" (a duet from Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness) by Nacho Duato
"Jardí Tancat" by Nacho Duato

"Georgia" by Lou Conte

Celebrating 40 years as a major force in American contemporary dance, Hubbard Street’s superlative dancers will return to Northrop with a program of highlights from the company’s impressive history. Lou Conte’s vision when he first established his dance school at LaSalle and Hubbard Street in the 1970s is honored with his joyous romp, "The 40s." William Forsythe’s "One Flat Thing, reproduced" hurtles us (and 20 metal tables) to the clatteringly contemporary present. In between, we’ll experience works by Crystal Pite, called “one of the greatest choreographic minds of her generation,” (Financial Times) and sensuously beautiful dances from Nacho Duato.

Forces acting within the earth, generally unseen by humans, manifest themselves in awesome displays of fiery power. Vulcão is a masterpiece collaboration between choreographer Marciano Silva dos Santos, composer Divanir Antonio Gattamorta, and Contempo’s unified and fiercely athletic cast of dancers. Featuring the company’s dynamic Afro-Brazilian contemporary dance fusion, the work takes inspiration from volcanoes. Also slang in Brazilian Portuguese to describe someone extremely desirable or detested, Vulcão goes beyond nature to reveal parallels found in human personalities and relationships. From shifting tectonic plates to fluid and viscous lava, the work pushes the dancers’ physicality and displays their unyielding vitality.

LONI LANDON teaches Open Classes at JSB
January 29 - February 2, 2018
9:30 - 11am | $10/class, $80/ten-class card

In town to set new work on the company, New York-based Loni Landon will be teaching JSB's open professional classes all week long!

From Loni: "This workshop produces very physical, visceral movement, challenging the dancer to push for new ideas in both their mental and physical approaches in a very contemporary style. The class begins with a warm up incorporating improvisation, imagery and investigation of the dancer's own natural way of moving. The movement invention will build up to daring and intricate partnering work. I will teach phrase work from my own choreography and then use various tools to both deconstruct and re-invent the phrase work producing new possibilities for the original movement. I strive to create an atmosphere that is open to sharing and creating.”

Tuning Score is an improvisational movement practice guided by a set of instructional “scores”.

This practice is about developing a sense of your body in space, by itself and with others, and how it might respond to others, uncertainty, its orientation and directionality. This practice is joyful and also head-scratching at times. You will be in the company of others in a similar place. This work is often done with eyes switching between open and closed.

If you are coming please send a "heads up" to Jennifer via email/text, or to receive information about the practice.

Parking is often available on Central Ave and on Lowry Ave in the church lot one half of a block west of Central.

Jennifer Arave has studied extensively with Lisa Nelson, the creator of the tuning scores, and others who are building on her practice and legacy.

This class is about catching movement in dissolving memories; to see/embody what is fleeting, honoring whatever manifests in our body in the moment and then giving momentum and commitment to re-shape the movement again. This excavation is meant to help us let go of the desire for perfected detail and exact replication to explore our artistry inside of forgetting and remembering.
