"Solo Square Dance" is a one-person percussive dance performance created and performed by Nic Gareiss.

The show commemorates the 1935 Irish Public Dance Halls Act, which banned citizens from dancing in homes. This 60-minute show features new pieces inspired by this and similar dance bans in Canada and the United States, including the dance ban in Pound, Virginia—lifted only recently in 1999!

Set in the round, "Solo Square Dance" uses traditional and original step dance movement from Ireland, Canada, and Appalachia to explore the relationship of public and private life, probing the subversive power of dancing bodies. The show begs the question: in light of its historic prohibitions, can dance act as a vehicle of transgression, liberation, and social transformation for our times?

Tickets: $21

Powerful energy fields come alive in a butoh performance. Qigong Master and butoh practitioner Gadu uses his skills to explore resonance in himself and the universe.

Photographer Ellie Kingsbury took 1500 photographs during a special Doushin Butoh practice by Gadu. On the gallery wall she features a portion of these images, while the full number will be projected onto Gadu during a special performance at the reception. When the world around us is bristling with friction and dissonance, this exhibition allows for a transformational interlude.

The Dreamer. The Socialite. The Boss. The Con. In Domino, thirteen unique personalities converge in an interplay that establishes a hierarchy of vulnerability and influence. At the start of each performance, dancers will blindly select who, among them, undertakes the role of the Con—anyone could be the villain, no one knows who it will be, and every performance will be different. When identities collide, some rise to power, and others become prey; but when a real Con is playing the game, it’s only a matter of time before they all fall down, one by one.

Audiences are invited to witness a unique improvisational experience featuring locally and internationally recognized flamenco dancers and musicians: dancer Illeana Gomez—Texas and Madrid, Spain; dancer Sachiko “La Chayí”—Osaka, Japan and Minneapolis; singer José Cortés Fernández—Marseille, France and Los Angeles; and guitarist Alejandro Pais Iriart—Buenos Aires, Argentina and Madrid, Spain.

Flamenco, in its distinctly southern Spanish tablao-style, offers a twist of spontaneity and skilled improvisation to traditional dance and music, which comes to life through the high-spirited collaboration between the dancer, singer, and guitarist performing together on stage.

Co-presented by Sachiko “La Chayí”, 2017 McKnight Dancer Fellow, and Minneapolis-based Arts Nest, CUATRO invites these artists to perform together for the first time in a series of six live performances. True to the roots of flamenco, the artists will perform a unique set for each show.

Butoh is a contemporary Japanese performance art form that began in the late 1950's. Originally started as an anti-establishment, anti-traditional dance theater, butoh explores the relationship between our mind and body, and it questions society's perceptions of the body and ideas of "beauty." Though it is considered an underground art form, butoh is practiced all over world.

This one-day workshop is for people who want to experience Doushin Butoh. The essence of Doushin Butoh is “Resonance,” beyond idea or concept. It can only be felt and experienced.

A new international dance festival showcasing the best of bachata, salsa, zouk, and kizomba will take place November 8–11 at the Crowne Plaza West in Minneapolis.

The Bailame Dance Festival is the largest of its kind in Minnesota and will feature over 30 local and international dance instructors, over 45 workshops, three nights of performances, and dedicated ballrooms featuring themed dancing on all three nights!

Bailame is from the Spanish word "bailar" which means "to dance" and that is what the festival is focused on—inviting the community to dance.
The focus of the first annual festival is on the education, preservation, and experience of international dancing. Featured dance workshops in salsa (On1 and On2), bachata (traditional, urban, sensual), kizomba (traditional, urban), cumbia, and Brazilian zouk.

Bailame Dance Festival has partnered with two community organizations as another way of giving back to the community: Bailame will collect monetary and food donations at the event.

BIPOC folks,

join in the dance just for us! BIPOC folks have led the practice in realizing what it means to be vulnerable, liberated, safe, and strong while dancing in common and contested space. Now, we are offering BIPOC-only sessions. Join us outside Clouds in Water Zen Center.

It’s great to be in our bodies, feel our beauty, feel how we matter, resist, thrive. It’s a political and healing practice. We will have time to discuss what’s present for us as individuals and as a community.

DYFIT works by bringing your awesome pocket music devices and earphones. We’ll have extra if you want to borrow anything. See you there!

If you can't join us on the 18 we will also be hosting a two more BIPOC Only events in September:

Sunday, September 1
11am-12:30pm at Clouds and Water Zen Center

Sunday September 15
11am-12:30pm at Clouds and Water Zen Center

Register for Ballet Royale's Boys' Ballet program today!

Unique in Minnesota, this innovative program is designed specifically for boys and taught by male teachers.
Ballet Royale understands the importance of providing targeted opportunities for boys in addition to the myriad of mixed classes available to both genders. Ballet Royale offer boys' classes for Pre-Ballet Creative Dance, general Boys' Dance cross training, and Ballet for Boys.

Ballet Royale’s boys' classes are for students five and older, with or without prior dance experience, and are developed and taught primarily by former professional dancer Rick Vogt. These classes focus on strength, stamina, conditioning, coordination, focus, and agility in a fun, creative atmosphere.

Whether the goal is to pursue dance itself or to cross-train for other sports such as hockey, soccer, football, etc., Ballet Royale’s Boys' Dance training benefits boys of all ages and abilities.

Ballet Royale's Performance Track and Professional Division Programs provide the most comprehensive, advanced professional ballet training available, and is for students who are talented, ambitious, and wish for a rigorous or pre-professional course of study in classical ballet and related dance forms.

Three years of Advanced Youth Ballet or its equivalent is generally required. Students must be pre-approved and invited each year to participate.

Students new to Ballet Royale seeking to enter this program must take a placement/audition class in order to be considered. All placement decisions within this program will be made by the school directors and faculty based on the student's abilities, not their age.

In addition to professional ballet training, Performance Track and Professional Division students will also have classes in classical-based performance jazz, modern/contemporary dance, pointe, repertoire, pas de deux, variations, Progressing Ballet Technique®, and more.

Ballet Royale Minnesota is celebrating its first ten years as Minnesota's premier ballet academy!

We provide the best classical ballet training combined with cutting edge anatomical/physiological advances and knowledge in a healthy, nurturing and non-competitive environment.

Our Youth Ballet program is for students age seven and older. This program follows a seven-level, elementary through advanced/intermediate ballet syllabus. All levels of Youth Ballet include repertoire training, in which students learn choreography and dances. The higher levels include modern/contemporary, preparation for pointe, performance/musical theater jazz, an elite solos/variations class, and pointe classes.

New students with prior dance training seeking to enter Youth Ballet 1 or higher are required to have a personal evaluation by the school faculty for placement.
Free student assessments are offered at our Open House celebration on August 24.

We would love for you to come dance with us!
