PERFORMANCES and EVENTS

Berit Ahlgren and her all-female cast use the Generating Room to explore their shared experience living in a male-dominated world, a reality which spans cultures and affects woman universally. The movement generated through this project is based on the cast’s shared and collective feelings of inequality, inadequateness, submission, and injustice, as well as unity, optimism, hope, and belief in change as women around the world are standing up for their voices to be heard.

One night only: a screening of two short films by Chicago artist Catherine Sullivan, followed by a conversation with the artist moderated by HAIR+NAILS co-director Ryan Fontaine.
In Little Hunt (2002) a dancer trained in ballroom and another versed in more contemporary style assimilate all the objects necessary for a production of Les Miserables on a tennis court. ’Tis Pity She’s a Fluxus Whore (2003) re-animates historic and stylistically divergent performances: actions are performed tragically and tragedy is performed as task.

This is the first presentation of Sullivan’s work in the Twin Cities since her 2007 installation “Triangle of Need” at Walker Art Center.
Presented in collaboration with HAIR+NAILS.

Thursday, May 16 at 7:00pm

Becoming an adult often means letting go of our childhood, staying focused on goals, and providing for the future. Escape your adult itinerary for a few hours and experience the world with childish enthusiasm once more.

Eloise is a young girl who likes to live life to the fullest. Her father, on the other hand, is incredibly concerned with being successful. He works long hours in his suit and tie, his briefcase constantly at his side. One evening, Eloise tells her father that she would like to read him a story, the story of "The Little Prince."

HAIR+NAILS is thrilled to present The Startled Faction by Catherine Sullivan, to open Friday, May 17 and running through June 16, 2019.

Presented as an installation in its native anamorphic format, the film features nine performers including some long-time Sullivan collaborators including Kristin Van Loon. Van Loon as well as Minneapolis dancers Justin Jones and Dylan Skybrook were also in Sullivan’s eight-channel film installation “Triangle of Need” at Walker Art Center in 2007.

In the 34-minute film The Startled Faction (a sensitivity training), the characters, with varying degrees of aptitude and motivation, rehearse symptoms of and methods for avoiding ambiguous labor (work outside one’s job description). Co-produced with Chicago Dancemakers Forum.

Join us for an opening reception with Ms. Sullivan at HAIR+NAILS on Friday, May 17 from 7-10pm. FREE.

DUMPSTER FIRE: An immersive outdoor performance centering queer catharsis, rage, and public grief.

Within a landscape of mass extinction of arts spaces in the Twin Cities and two years of relentless political intensity, we weave magic, tell stories, invite communal mourning, and honor complex relationships—to each other, and to place, stolen land, earth, global decay, and grief on a massive scale.

Led by movement artist Laura Levinson and featuring performer-collaborators Ondine, Xochi de la Luna & Rachel Lieberman, Chava Kokhleffel, Teighlor McGee, and Sami Pfeffer.

Both shows will be ASL interpreted (by Asher Edes) and audio described (by Elana Centor). Golf carts available onsite for mobility assistance.

Inspired by research into the nature of time and the combination of dystopian narratives in popular culture with resurgent political and social activism, Birds of the Future explores what it is to recognize one’s place in a seemingly unending cycle of utopian impulses and dystopian realities. Rather than revel in a bleak aesthetic of apocalypse, Birds of the Future wrestles with the possibilities revealed by chaos—among them, a new understanding of time in which each moment is open to the possibilities of a new way of being.

Acclaimed internationally for her ability to turn a traditional grammar into a subtle, deeply internalized, personal dance poetry, Padma Bhushan Smt. Alarmel Valli is a choreographer whose dance is uncompromisingly classical, but is, at the same time, an undeniable language of self-expression.

Guru to Ragamala Dance Company Artistic Directors Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy—who have been studying Bharatanatyam under Ms. Valli since they met her in Minneapolis in 1984—their training with this master artist formed the foundation of their aesthetic and has been fundamental to the work of the company.

This talk is cosponsored by Ragamala and Yogavaram. Free, tickets are required.

Butoh is a contemporary Japanese performance art form that began in the late 1950's. Originally started as an anti-establishment, anti-traditional dance theater, butoh explores the relationship between our mind and body, and it questions society's perceptions of the body and ideas of "beauty." Though it is considered an underground art form, butoh is practiced all over world.

This one-day workshop is for people who want to experience Doushin Butoh. The essence of Doushin Butoh is “Resonance,” beyond idea or concept. It can only be felt and experienced.

Come and experience the power of Resonance!

- Go into meditative state using Spring Forest Qigong techniques.

Self-Myofascial Release for Dancers
This class is all about taking care of our dancing bodies, using techniques from the Roll Model® Method to both enhance our performance as dancers as well as guide the body into a state of rest and recovery. In the first half of class, we will alternate between modern phrase work and corresponding brief rolling sequences (using therapy balls) to explore the impact of self-myofascial release on our sense of our bodies in space, range of motion, ease, breath, power, and more. The second half of class will be focused entirely on rolling, spanning several areas of the body and moving toward increased down regulation of the nervous system.

We will be using Roll Model® massage therapy balls, which will be discounted to $12 for purchase in class. Participants are also welcome to bring a yoga mat, yoga block(s), and/or your own massage therapy balls—though this is not required. Open to all levels!

OTHER DANCE NEWS

A celebration of beloved ballet teacher and friend Marcia Keegan is planned for Sunday, May 19 in Studio 6A at Minnesota Dance Theatre.
Please note: this celebration was originally scheduled for 2pm, and is now being held 3:00-5:00pm.
To RSVP and for more information, please visit the Caring Bridge website for Marcia Keegan: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/marciakeegan.

Marcia passed away at home from cancer on Saturday morning, March 16, less than two weeks after having taught her last class. Loved ones were by her side, including her dog Sophie. Marcia traveled the world performing and teaching, and also for her business, Global Village.

Most recently, she taught at Minnesota Dance Theatre, Zenon, Continental Ballet, and in Edina and Hudson. Her classes were typically full to the brim with students, who recognized both her enormous talent for teaching ballet and her buoyant and compassionate approach. She will be missed by many!
